The Teachers Service Commission will offer continual retooling (retraining) to teachers to guarantee compliance with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia stated this during a meeting with three key teachers: the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Teachers (KUSNET).

This follows President Dr. William Samoei Ruto’s direction that the Teachers Service Commission hold talks with teachers’ unions to resolve an industrial dispute over many issues affecting the welfare of public school teachers.

The ruling came after teachers’ organizations issued a strike notice over the contentious issues. The TSC requested that the three teacher unions (KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET) meet on Wednesday to examine the issues.

    PWPER Report

The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) Report included critical proposals for retooling teachers, especially as the country moves to a competency-based curriculum (CBC), with only five classes remaining under the 8-4-4 system.

To attract, develop, and retain effective teachers, PWPER advocates for a one-year mandatory retooling program to ensure that all graduates of pre-service training are CBC compliant, as well as a one-year mandatory internship program after completing pre-service training before being registered in the teaching profession.

According to TSC, a multi-agency approach has been adopted to retool at least 229,000 primary school teachers and 55,125 others for junior secondary schools in order to ensure CBC’s successful implementation.

This indicates that the entire number of instructors retooled for CBC accounts for 82% of the total number of teachers employed, and the Commission will continue to run the training program to cover all of them.

Following Wednesday’s deliberations, the Commission announced that the government has provided funds for the CBA’s second phase, which will go into force on July 1, 2024.
