TSC Promotes 51,232 Teachers Through Competitive Promotions, 20,000 Annually Via Common Cadre.

On Friday, June 16th, 2024, His Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto directed the Teachers Service Commission to conduct talks with teachers’ unions to resolve an industrial dispute over several concerns harming the welfare of public school teachers.

The directive followed a strike notice issued by teachers’ unions over the controversial issues. The TSC invited the three teacher unions (KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET) to meet on Wednesday to discuss the issues.

The delayed implementation of the reviewed 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) ranked first on the agenda.

Following Wednesday’s deliberations, the Commission said that the government has provided funds for the implementation of the CBA’s second phase, which will take effect on July 1, 2024.

Other issues that the trade unions had but were settled by the commission include:
    • The review of the career progression guidelines is continuing. Current remittance of third-party deductions
    • Teachers now have access to both public and private hospitals under the Teachers Medical Scheme.
    • The government has committed resources to retool teachers for the introduction of CBC.
    • The TSC has promoted 51,232 teachers through competitive promotions and an additional 20,000 annually through a common cadre.

Effectively, the unions have taken note of the TSC’s position and decided to consult their internal organs before removing the strike notice.

TSC appreciated the unions for involving the Commission in ensuring that there will be no disruptions to learning in schools during the Third Term in 2024.

Despite the difficult economic climate, the TSC expressed gratitude to the government for providing appropriate finances for the CBA and all other teacher programs.

TSC also congratulated the teachers and other stakeholders for the outstanding work they continue to undertake to promote smooth learning activities in schools.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) stated that it is committed to providing a positive working environment for all teachers under its employment.

TSC has urged all teachers to go to schools on Monday for the commencement of the Third Term, given that the government has released funds for the second part of the 2021-2025 CBA.
