Kuppet Secretary General Akello has joined the long-service teachers in criticizing the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for failing to apply salary commitments and substantive appointments.
Misori, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers points out that the TSC has disregarded around 130,000 qualified educators for promotions, fueling general discontent within the field.
Thomas for instance, started teaching in 1990 and got transferred to Jericho in 1994.
Despite his high academic credentials and numerous accolades, he has been shortlisted for interviews by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) several times but has never been selected.
In 2010, while studying for Master’s degree, he attended an interview, and In 2017, another interview.
Lawrence Maraganga is another instructor who, despite his qualifications, is locked in the same job category.
The last interview was this year… after the letter came, he was not there.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori says “Some of these teachers have moved no steps ahead.”
They claim that some teachers who entered the profession later rose through the ranks much more quickly.
“Some of those behind me are way, way in better positions… wengine tuliwafunza,” Thomas growled.
These teachers are among hundreds who are approaching retirement with little to show for their years of service. This is a circumstance that has prompted many teachers to skip work and hold ongoing rallies to demand their rights.
Teachers have a variety of complaints, but the issue of promotions appears to be the elephant in the room, driving teachers away from the classroom.
These long-standing concerns have yet to be properly addressed. Will the teaching profession ever get the respect it deserves?
Speaking on the continuing teachers’ strike, Misori said that although the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was a consideration, career progression was the main cause of the protest.
Misori emphasized that while many teachers have progressed in their education and gained experience, many have remained within the same work group for years. He noted that this inertia has made teachers feel devalued and neglected by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
