KNUT Pushes for Teachers’ Demands on New CBA Talks With TSC.
Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), provided an update to teachers regarding ongoing labor negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
He highlighted that discussions surrounding a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have commenced, coinciding with the implementation of the second phase of the revised CBA.
KNUT has already submitted a memorandum to the TSC, and Oyuu emphasized the importance of ensuring that the upcoming CBA is more comprehensive than its predecessor. According to him, the labor issues presented include the execution of the amended second phase of the CBA.
This phase served as a platform for initiating discussions about a new CBA. He pointed out that these negotiations are already underway, and KNUT is determined to avoid a situation where the next CBA falls short in addressing key issues.
“The issues that we shared, the labor issue was one the implementation of the second phase of the CBA, amended phase. This had double benefit, that second phase in whichever way was an opening for discussion over a new CBA, and we have already started.”
“We have presented a memorandum to TSC, and we want to make sure that this time around it shall not be a maternity CBA as it was.”
Reforms to the Education System
Oyuu also addressed the ongoing reforms in Kenya’s education system, particularly the introduction of Grade N in comprehensive schools. He explained that Senior School is now part of the evolving 2-6-3-3 education framework, which adapts to current demands. According to Oyuu, the educational system must adapt to these changes, ensuring the full implementation of the new framework.

Oyuu clarified that primary schools now house Grade N, while comprehensive schools will cover from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Grade Nine. He reassured educators that the new system, now called 2-6-3-3, includes three years of Senior School and is designed to meet contemporary educational needs.
“Grade N grade is domiciled in primary schools. The comprehensive school has ECD to grade Nine. Mtu asiseme kwamba the system will change. It is system 2-6-3 and Senior school three (2-6-3-3).”
