DCI Focuses on Matron’s Mysterious Absence in Deadly Hillside Endarasha Fire.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are ramping up efforts to determine the cause of the devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, which claimed the lives of 21 students.

The investigation is centered on three primary leads:

    • The absence of the dormitory matron on the night of the fire.
    • The structural integrity of the dormitory building.
    • A possible electrical malfunction.

The DCI is particularly interested in why the matron, who was responsible for overseeing the boys, was not present during the incident. Her unexplained absence has raised serious questions about her role and whereabouts on the tragic night.

The incident comes at a time when Kenyans are demanding accountability for the increasing number of school fires across the country, particularly in the third term.

This trend has exposed weaknesses in infrastructure and discipline in schools, bringing to light the poor conditions in which many dormitories and classrooms are built. Citizens are eager to know whether this fire resulted from negligence or possible arson.

    Scrutinizing the Matron’s Absence

Investigators are trying to determine if the matron’s absence was related to an accident she reportedly had, which might have prevented her from reporting to work.

However, conflicting reports suggest uncertainty regarding whether she officially communicated her inability to fulfill her duties that evening. This inconsistency has become a critical aspect of the investigation.

Investigators are also examining the dormitory’s construction. The DCI has questioned the academy’s proprietor about the use of substandard materials in building the boys’ dormitory, which initial findings show was mainly constructed with iron sheets and wood.

These materials likely contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the security measures in place, as the metallic doors, meant to protect students, became deadly barriers during the fire.

Disturbing images from the charred dormitory show the aftermath of the blaze, with shattered windows, twisted metal frames, and scorched beds indicating the boys’ desperate struggle to escape.

The girls’ dormitory, located nearby, shares a similar wooden structure, prompting further concerns among parents and guardians about overall safety.

    Investigating Electrical Faults

Another key focus of the investigation is the possibility of an electrical fault. Detectives are probing whether someone attempted to turn off the lights at the main meter, which may have triggered the fire.

A critical question is whether the matron, had she been present, would have been in charge of the lights-off routine that evening, potentially preventing the incident.

Amid the ongoing investigation, a group of parents is planning protests at the institution, demanding transparency and accountability from the school authorities.

They believe that the deaths of the students could have been avoided if the school had implemented better safety protocols and oversight.

    The Fire’s Aftermath

The fire, which erupted on Thursday, September 5, has left both the school and local community in deep shock. At the time, 156 boys were housed in the dormitory.

Nineteen bodies were recovered from the scene, and two more students succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The DCI’s Homicide Directorate, along with forensic experts, is meticulously analyzing the debris to uncover the cause of the blaze.

Director of Criminal Investigations Abraham Mugambi assured the public that the investigation is progressing rapidly, with forensic teams working closely with other stakeholders.

He expressed the DCI’s determination to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident. DNA samples have been collected from the families of the deceased to assist in identifying the remains.

As the investigation continues, attention is also turning toward the school management’s role in ensuring the safety of students. The use of flammable materials in the construction of the dormitory has raised serious concerns about negligence.

Parents and guardians argue that this tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for schools nationwide to reevaluate safety standards and take steps to prevent future incidents.

Next Steps: Autopsies and Final Report

Autopsies on the victims are scheduled for Thursday, September 12, with the DCI expected to release a detailed report following the completion of forensic examinations.
