Early Wednesday morning, a fire broke out at Oma John Mbadi Mixed Secondary School in Suba, Homa Bay County, disrupting students’ studies.
During the incident, a dormitory was entirely burned, and millions of shillings in property were destroyed. School administration confirmed that approximately 65 students spent the night in the dormitory.
Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring told journalists that the flame broke out at 7 a.m. as students were in their classrooms going about their normal academic routines. As of Wednesday noon, the cause of the fire remained unknown.
Sebastian reported the destruction of at least 60 boxes containing student belongings. He further revealed that law enforcement authorities would conduct thorough investigations, including exploring the possibility that the latest incident might be a case of arson.
Images from the early morning event obtained by Mwalimunews.com showed a dormitory engulfed in flames and smoke billowing from the building.
The video showed a group of students at a school staring helplessly as the situation unfolded. Police officials have confirmed their arrival at the facility to investigate the cause of the fire.
The latest incident adds to the growing list of fires reported at schools around the country last week.
