MP Calls for End to Boarding Schools Amid Fire Incidents.

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood has suggested that the government consider abolishing boarding schools due to the recurring incidents of mysterious fires that have destroyed dormitories across various boarding schools in the country.

During a visit to CCM Township Day Secondary School in Meru town, Dawood expressed his concern over the regrettable outcomes of these fires, which have resulted in injuries, loss of lives, and destruction of property.

He emphasized that the government should consider this drastic measure if the fires persist.

    Boarding Schools and Fire Incidents

Dawood noted that it is puzzling how these fires only occur in boarding schools, particularly during exam periods, which typically fall in the third term of the academic year.

He stressed the need for the government to either eliminate boarding schools or investigate the root causes of these fires to prevent further loss of lives and property.

The MP encouraged students facing challenges to seek guidance and counseling from teachers, parents, and education officials instead of resorting to destructive actions like burning dormitories, which endanger the lives of their peers.

He pointed to the tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy, where 21 students lost their lives and 14 others sustained injuries, as a stark reminder of the consequences of such incidents.

    Recommendations for Safer Boarding Schools

Dawood urged the Ministry of Education to reassess the boarding school model to ensure it is safer and more accommodating for learners.

He proposed that it should be mandatory for matrons to reside within the dormitories, rather than outside, so they can respond swiftly in case of emergencies.

“The Ministry of Education should evaluate the model of boarding schools to make it safe and friendly to learners.”

Dawood’s recommendations aim to prevent future tragedies and promote a safer learning environment for students across the country.
