Retired KNUT Leaders Form Welfare Organization, RKLA.
Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leaders in the Gusii region have formed an association to fulfill their social and financial concerns. The Retired KNUT Leaders Association (RKLA) seeks to support its members by sharing ideas and working on various parts of their lives.
Objectives and Expansion
Jimo Martin, the group’s Secretary and a former Executive Secretary of the Gucha branch, noted that the worsening social and economic standing of retired officials made it necessary to form a welfare organization.
The association launched its recruiting campaign in Kisii and Nyamira counties, with hopes to extend to additional counties and eventually become a national organization. One of their main goals is to mentor young teachers.
“We started in our small way and intend to extend the membership to the rest of the country,” he said.
Membership and Financial Support
The association, which started with 40 members, has financial strategies in place to support its members. Shem Nyaundi, the group’s Treasurer and former Executive Secretary of the Kisii Central branch, underscored the significance of preserving the integrity of the teaching profession.
The association plans to raise funds to establish a sinking fund for the construction of adequate residences for its members.

Interest-Free Loans and Income Generation
Victor Nyangaya, the association’s Chairman and former Nyamira Treasurer, added that members will have the opportunity to borrow money from the group without being charged interest.
To sustain the association, they plan to engage in income-generating ventures such as agriculture, real estate, and hospitality.
