246,391 Candidates Achieve University Entry Grade in KCSE 2024.

The number of candidates in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination who qualified for direct university entry with a grade of C plus and above reached 246,391, as announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.

This figure represents 25.53% of the total candidates, an increase from 22.27% (201,133 candidates) in 2023. The rise has been attributed to the adoption of an improved or new grading system.

The 2024 KCSE exams, which began on October 28, were taken by 965,501 candidates across 10,755 examination centers nationwide. To ensure timely and accurate marking, the government increased the number of examiners to 32,800, up from 29,876 in 2023.

The CS highlighted that the number of candidates achieving a C minus and above, which qualifies for direct entry into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) diploma programs, was 476,889.

This translates to 49.41% of the total candidates in 2024, compared to 44.42% (401,216 candidates) in 2023. Additionally, 62.76% of candidates (605,774) scored D plus and above, an improvement from 58% (526,222) in 2023.

    Enhanced Examination Credibility

To improve the integrity of the examination process, candidates’ papers were personalized and anonymized for the first time.

This initiative was aimed at promoting objectivity in marking and holding candidates accountable for irregularities. Despite these measures, 840 candidates were found to have engaged in exam malpractice in 2024, resulting in the cancellation of their results.

Of the top achievers, 1,693 candidates scored straight A grades. Ogamba also reported that the total number of candidates sitting the 2024 KCSE exam rose to 962,512, marking a 6.89% increase from 2023.

Candidates can access their individual results online through a link on the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website.

To retrieve their results, candidates are required to enter their index number along with one of their registered names. For those experiencing difficulties, the CS advised contacting KNEC via the toll-free numbers 0800724900 or 0800721410.
