46,000 JSS Teachers to be Permanently Employed From January 2025 – CS Mbadi Confirms.

The National Treasury has presented its views on the Division of Revenue Amendment Bill 2024 (National Assembly Bill No. 38).

Following the initial approval of the Division of Revenue Bill 2024 by both the National Assembly and the Senate, the proposed amendments have been reviewed.

John Mbadi, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for The National Treasury and Economic Planning has acknowledged the financial challenges related to the employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

Although provisions have been made for their hiring, Mbadi says, the allocation of funds to employ JSS teachers on a permanent basis will only be available starting in January 2025. This delay is due to insufficient funds in the current budget cycle.

“Due to withdrawal of the finance bill of 2024, there are critical and national interests that are unfunded. This include employment of junior secondary school teachers,” Mbadi said on Monday.

    Treasury Prioritize Critical Areas

The lack of immediate financial resources has pushed the government to prioritize other critical areas for the time being.

The permanent employment of JSS teachers is, however, firmly scheduled to begin early next year, ensuring that this essential educational requirement is addressed once the financial situation allows.

“I will be clear here that yes we have provided for JSS teachers but from January because of insufficient funds. That is number one, so the money that we have to take care of employment on permanent terms for JSS teachers is going to be available from January 1st,” he noted.

In addition to the hiring of JSS teachers, the government is also focusing on other key sectors like health service delivery and universal health coverage.

These areas, much like the employment of JSS teachers, have experienced funding constraints but remain a priority in future budget plans.
