CUE Begins Process of Establishing Nyamira’s First University.
Following President William Ruto’s instruction, the Commission for University Education (CUE) has commenced the process of establishing Nyamira’s first university.
CUE CEO Mike Kuria visited Kiabonyoru Boys High School, the planned site for the university, and urged stakeholders to support the proposal. He highlighted that the institution would provide superior education once it was created.
During the inspection of Kiabonyoru, the CUE sought to assess the site’s suitability for the university, examine the availability of necessary facilities, and check that legal procedures were followed. Kuria stressed the necessity of establishing a solid basis for higher education in Nyamira.
He added that once completed, the university will be open to all Kenyans, ensuring that they received a high-quality education.
Legal Challenges
However, the university’s formation is complicated by legal issues. Just a week earlier, 44 petitioners, led by West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka, filed a court challenge to prevent the government’s plans to establish the institution at Kiabonyoru. The petitioners, represented by lawyer Danstan Omari, argued that the CUE should make the final decision on establishing the institution.
The petitioners also asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to look into alleged misappropriation of funds. They stated that about Ksh.100 million was earmarked to create an Eldoret University component campus in Kiabonyoru, but it was reportedly plundered.
Omari stated that the Attorney General has been included in the litigation to explain to President Ruto and the Cabinet that establishing the location of a university is a responsibility of the CUE, not the executive.
Divisions
In recent months, controversy over the university’s establishment has prompted conflicts among elected leaders. Each of the leaders appeared to be pushing for the new institution to be located within their district or political base.

Kisii University, in collaboration with the CUE, is intended to aid in the launch of the projected Nyamira University.
