Despite the progress, challenges in exam integrity persisted. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) invalidated the results of 840 candidates due to confirmed malpractice.

Additionally, the council withheld the results of 2,899 candidates pending investigations, which are expected to conclude within 30 days.

    Improvement in Top Grades

The 2024 KCSE results revealed significant improvement in academic performance compared to the previous year. A total of 1,693 students earned a coveted Grade A, an increase from 1,216 in 2023. Among them, 556 were female, while 1,137 were male.

The number of students achieving high grades in other categories also saw a boost:

    • Grade A-: 7,743 (2,840 female, 4,903 male)
    • Grade B+: 19,150 (8,108 female, 11,042 male)

A total of 246,391 candidates attained a Grade C+ or higher, qualifying them for direct university admission. This marks a steady improvement in academic performance and increased access to tertiary education.

    Distribution of Other Grades

The detailed breakdown of grades highlighted gender disparities in performance across categories:

    • Grade C+: 99,338 (50,397 female, 48,940 male)

    Rising Trends in Grade E

The number of students scoring Grade E, the lowest category, rose slightly in 2024 compared to 2023. A total of 48,333 candidates scored Grade E, with 20,112 female and 28,221 male. This marks an increase of 159 students from the previous year, which recorded 48,174 candidates in this category.
