TSC Must Confirm 46,000 Intern Teachers By January or Face Consequences, Warns KNUT SG Collins Oyuu.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, has issued a stern warning regarding the confirmation of 46,000 intern teachers.

He emphasized the need to make these intern teachers permanent and pensionable by January of the upcoming year.

Oyuu warned that failure to do so would lead to severe consequences, stating that if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) does not act, drastic measures may follow.

“The 46,000 intern teachers, come rain, come shine, must be confirmed as permanent and pensionable by January this next year. And we shall see to see it; if not so, then hell might break loose.” Oyuu warned.

Despite the government’s allocation of Ksh 1.1 billion for teacher promotions, Oyuu pointed out that this amount is inadequate to cover all qualified educators. He emphasized the need for additional funding to ensure that the promotions meet the demand for qualified teachers across the country.

Calls for TSC to Set Confirmation Dates

The issue of teacher confirmation has garnered widespread attention, with Ndindi Nyoro, Chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, also pressing the TSC to take action.

Nyoro emphasized the crucial role of clear communication in informing junior secondary school (JSS) intern teachers about their permanent and pensionable confirmation dates.

He stressed that uncertainty surrounding the confirmation dates has left many teachers unable to plan their futures effectively.

“Please give that official communication so that the JSS teachers can actually know and they can be able to budget when is this date that they are going to be confirmed.”
