TSC Advertises 34,016 Teacher Promotion Vacancies, Applications Close August 10.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has advertised 34,016 promotion vacancies for teachers serving in public primary schools, secondary schools, and teacher training colleges, opening applications for career advancement during the 2026/2027 Financial Year.
According to the commission, applications are open across 30 promotional cadres, ranging from Senior Teacher II to Chief Principal, with eligible teachers required to submit their applications through the online TSC recruitment portal by Monday, August 10, 2026.
The commission stated that manual applications will not be accepted, emphasizing that all applications must be submitted electronically through the official Teachers Service Commission online portal.
The promotions follow the allocation of Sh2 billion in the 2026/2027 national budget to facilitate teacher career progression and are expected to provide advancement opportunities for thousands of teachers who have remained in the same job groups for extended periods.
TSC Invites Online Applications
In the promotion notice, the Teachers Service Commission invited qualified teachers to apply for the advertised positions in accordance with the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).
“Pursuant to its mandate, the commission invites applications from suitably qualified teachers for the following posts, in line with the Career Progression Guidelines. Interested candidates, who meet the required qualifications, should submit their applications online through the TSC portal – www.teachersonline.go.ke to be received no later than Monday, 10 August 2026. Manual applications shall not be considered,” the commission stated.
The commission noted that applications must be submitted before the deadline, after which the recruitment process will proceed in accordance with the established promotion procedures.
Promotions Follow Budget Allocation
The advertisement comes after the Government allocated Sh2 billion specifically to support teacher promotions during the current financial year.
According to the 2026/2027 Budget Estimates, the Teachers Service Commission’s overall allocation increased from Sh387.2 billion in the 2025/2026 Financial Year to Sh422.6 billion for the 2026/2027 Financial Year.
The increased allocation is intended to support:
- Teacher management.
- Implementation of education reforms.
- Teacher welfare.
- Improved service delivery.
In addition to the Sh2 billion allocated for promotions, the budget also provides:
- Sh4.9 billion for the conversion of 20,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms.
TSC Raised Concerns Over Promotion Backlog
The advertisement comes after the Teachers Service Commission informed Parliament that 178,871 primary and secondary school teachers have remained in the same job groups due to prolonged budgetary constraints.
According to the commission, the promotion backlog has accumulated over several years because of inadequate funding required to facilitate career progression.
The commission further indicated that:
- The highest number of stagnated secondary school teachers are in Grade C3.
- The highest number of stagnated primary school teachers are in Grade C1.
TSC noted that many teachers in these grades have remained in the same positions despite meeting the qualifications required for promotion.
Majority of Vacancies Target Middle-Level Career Grades
Among the 34,016 promotion vacancies, the largest allocations have been made to middle-level teaching positions.
The advertised vacancies include:
- 13,490 Senior Teacher II positions.
- 5,956 Senior Master IV positions.
- 4,210 Senior Teacher I positions.
The remaining vacancies are distributed across other promotional grades covering teachers in public primary schools, secondary schools, and teacher training colleges, up to the position of Chief Principal.
KUPPET Demanded Immediate Promotions
The promotion advertisement follows sustained calls by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) for the commission to address long-standing career stagnation.
During its first National Governing Council meeting for the 2026–2031 term, the union called on the Teachers Service Commission to advertise promotions for 135,000 teachers who have remained in the same job groups for many years.
KUPPET Secretary-General Akello Misori stated:
“We are demanding that the TSC immediately advertise vacancies for the promotion of 135,000 teachers who have stagnated in their job groups. We also want them to implement the second phase of the 2025–2029 CBA and should immediately truncate the third and fourth phases of the CBA to be implemented in July 2027.”
School Heads Also Called for Faster Promotions
School heads have also urged the Teachers Service Commission to accelerate promotions.
Speaking during the 49th Kenya Senior Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Annual Conference held in Mombasa, National Chairman Willie Kuria said prolonged stagnation had negatively affected the morale of school administrators.
“One of the most pressing concerns remains stagnation in certain job groups. Many principals, especially those serving in Grade D3, remain in the same grade for prolonged periods with limited opportunities for advancement. This situation affects morale and undermines the motivation of highly experienced school heads who continue to shoulder immense responsibilities in managing institutions,” he said.
TSC Chairperson Cites Previous Promotions
During the same KESSHA conference, Teachers Service Commission Chairperson Dr. Jamleck Muturi announced that the Government had allocated Sh2 billion to facilitate teacher promotions during the current financial year.
Dr. Muturi stated:
“Sh2 billion has been earmarked to facilitate the promotion of approximately 30,000 teachers across various grades. These promotions are intended to recognise merit, reward experience and provide career growth opportunities for deserving teachers.”
He further disclosed that the commission had promoted 274,285 teachers over the past three years, comprising:
- 100,067 teachers through competitive promotions.
- 174,218 teachers through common cadre promotions.
He added:
“TSC data reveals that many teachers have stagnated in the same job group for many years. The good news is that with the Sh2 billion budgetary allocation, we will promote more teachers again this financial year.”
Promotion Requirements
According to the Teachers Service Commission advertisement, applicants must satisfy the requirements provided under the Career Progression Guidelines.
Eligible applicants are required to:
- Serve the prescribed minimum period in their current grade.
- Attain satisfactory performance appraisal ratings.
- Demonstrate the ability to supervise, mentor, and provide professional support to other teachers.
