ECDE teachers have long been among Kenya’s lowest-paid governmental personnel. The Kenyan Constitution established the Wage and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in 2010, and since then, it has conducted multiple wage reviews for public employees, including ECDE teachers. So, what is the grading of ECDE teachers in 2024, as well as their revised payment scale?
Early childhood educators are in charge of providing education and care to children from birth to age five. They play an important role in children’s lives because they are often their first teachers outside of the house.
ECDE teachers’ academic requirements
To become an ECDE teacher, you can study at a variety of institutions, including colleges and universities that offer certificate, diploma, and degree programs in ECDE. Before enrolling, you must meet the institution’s basic criteria.
The standard criteria are: To pursue an ECDE degree, you must have a KCSE mean grade of C+ or higher. A diploma and certificate require a KCSE mean grade of C plain or above, respectively.
However, the county is currently confirming and registering ECDE teachers.
ECDE teachers Grading
Kenya’s ECDE teachers are divided into three categories: permanent and pensionable teachers, three-year contracts, and untrained teachers. They are further classified into three employment groups:
- F (Certificate Holder): Assistant ECDE Teacher 3.
- H (diploma holder): ECDE teacher. 3.
- K (degree holder): ECDE teacher.
Since the start of the year, the Ministry of Education has been working to raise the salaries of ECDE teachers. Following a request from the MOE, the county governments, now in control of ECDE, requested information from the SRC on the salaries and perks of ECDE teachers on January 13, 2023.
As part of the third pay review cycle, the SRC promptly began investigating the salaries of ECDE teachers, and they recently made their findings public. The wonderful news for ECDE teachers is that salaries and perks have improved.
The revised pay scale for ECDE teachers
The Council of Governors collaborated with the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to raise ECDE teachers’ wages and establish a fair, long-term pay plan.
How much does an ECD instructor make? Nairobi County, as the capital, pays the highest salaries: certificate holders earn Ksh. 33,020.

Diploma holders get Ksh. 36,220 while degree holders earn Ksh. 59,770.
Kisumu County is another region that provides excellent earnings, with certificate holders earning Ksh. 32,800 and diploma holders earning Ksh. 36,000.
It’s worth noting that ECDE teachers’ salaries in other countries in 2023 range greatly, from Ksh. 9,420 to Ksh. 38,380.
Final thoughts about ECDE teachers
The current grading system for ECDE teachers in Kenya is basic. They are divided into three job groups: F (certificate holder), H (diploma holder), and K (degree holder). Their pay increased following the TSC intervention; however, the amount varies by county. ECDE teachers in Nairobi (Cluster 1) earn more than those in other locations (Cluster 4).
