TSC to Recruit 20,000 Teachers in October.
In October, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to recruit 20,000 teachers on internship terms. This cohort will consist of 18,000 junior secondary school interns and 2,000 primary school interns.
Infrastructure and CBC Support
Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, disclosed that 56,000 teachers have already been recruited to support the Competency Based Assessment (CBC) system. An additional 20,000 teachers are expected to further enhance this initiative.
Dr. Kipsang also announced that the government is constructing 18,000 new classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 students starting January next year. Of these, 11,000 classrooms are being built with the aid of development partners, while 7,000 classrooms are funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
The government remains dedicated to the success of the CBC and is collaborating with various partners to establish the required infrastructure.
Transition Plans and Permanent Positions
Plans are in place to ensure a seamless transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 in 2026. Additionally, the TSC will confirm 46,000 teachers currently on internship terms to permanent and pensionable positions in January 2025. The Commission has allocated Ksh 18.7 billion for this conversion.
Internship Details
Teachers completing their internship will receive a certificate, which will be beneficial for future recruitment. The TSC has extended the contracts of 18,000 junior secondary and 2,000 primary school intern teachers by four months, as their initial contracts ended on August 31, 2024.
The Teacher Internship Programme, a one-year initiative, is designed to build and sustain the skills of new teachers. It targets unemployed registered teachers, placing them in learning institutions where they will gain practical experience through mentorship and coaching.
