NHIF Services End September 30 as SHIF Takes Over: Registration and New Benefits.

Kenyans will no longer be able to access healthcare services through the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) after September 30, 2024, as the government shifts entirely to the new health insurance program, the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

This transition is set to be implemented on October 1, 2024, with the Social Health Authority (SHA) taking over management responsibilities.

    Financial Management and Employer Registration

NHIF CEO Elijah Wachira announced that payments received up to October 9 will be credited to NHIF, while any payments made after this date will be attributed to SHA.

Employers are advised to register their employees before the October 1 deadline using the SHA employer portal at https://sha.go.ke/.

To do so, employers must create and verify an account, then enter and register their employees’ details with SHA. Contributions, which amount to 2.75% of an employee’s monthly salary, will be directed to SHIF.

    New Benefits and Tariffs

On August 30, the Ministry of Health introduced new tariffs under the Social Health Insurance Act (SHIA) medical scheme.

Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa confirmed that the Linda Mama program, which supports expectant mothers, will be integrated and improved to enhance efforts in reducing maternal mortality rates in Kenya.

Specifically, she noted that tariffs for normal deliveries are now set at Ksh.10,000 and for C-sections at Ksh.30,000, aiming to provide comprehensive coverage for mothers and their families.

Cancer patients will receive coverage up to Ksh.400,000 for oncological services. For diabetes patients accessing outpatient care at Level 4 to 6 facilities, the coverage will be up to Ksh.4,300; for hypertension, up to Ksh.2,850; and for sickle cell anemia, up to Ksh.6,800 per year.

    Inpatient Services and Specialized Care

Inpatient services at Level 4 to 6 hospitals will have a coverage limit of up to 180 days per household, with tariffs set at Ksh.3,360 for Level 4, Ksh.3,920 for Level 5, and Ksh.4,480 for Level 6.

Additionally, the management of kidney failure in Level 3 to 6 facilities will incur charges ranging from Ksh.10,650 per session for hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration, and a monthly fee of Ksh.85,200 for peritoneal dialysis.
