KNUT Announces Potential Strike Over Unfulfilled 2021 CBA

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT)’s threats to strike could result in the imminent suspension of learning in institutions throughout the nation.

KNUT Chairman Patrick Karinga has disclosed that its members will strike at the commencement of the third term if the government fails to comply with the 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Karinga explained that the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) was not adhering to the salary increment agreements that were stipulated in 2021 as a result of the most recent budget adjustments.

The revised budget estimates anticipate that TSC will incur a loss of nearly Ksh10 billion.

The chairman indicated that they may pursue alternative measures if their expectations were not met. He observed that the educators were well-organized and knew how to assert their rights. He also specified that those responsible should anticipate a different kind of response if the necessary actions were not taken by July 31.

Consequently, he urged the Commission to reengage Parliament in order to guarantee that the allocation designated for the CBA remains unaffected.

The KNUT official emphasized the importance of TSC adhering to the legal agreement.

The strike will be a critical time for education, as Form Four students will be preparing for their examinations just two months after the Third Term reopens. If it is implemented, it will cause a significant disruption.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is anticipated to commence on November 4. Nevertheless, certain subjects, including French and music practicals, will commence as early as October 22.

The academic calendar has already been adjusted as a result of the May flooding, which resulted in a two-week extension of school closures.

The teachers’ demands have not yet been addressed by the Ministry of Education and TSC.
