Gov’t Donates Food to Hillside Endarasha Academy After 17 Die in Dormitory Fire.

The government has announced a slew of measures aimed at reducing the effects of the Thursday night dormitory fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, which has already claimed the lives of 17 students.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said in a statement on Friday that the institution had received 50 sacks of rice, an equal amount of beans, 100 blankets, and 100 mattresses.

“50 bags of rice and 50 bags of beans are en route to the site via special programs. He also announced the dispatch of 100 mattresses and 100 blankets, with an estimated arrival time of 1300 hrs (1 pm).

Mwaura stated that the Ministry of Health and the Nyeri County Government Health Department are on-site examining survivors’ medical needs.

The Pankaj Foundation provided 50 first-aid kits, and ODP will deliver them to the location today. Medical supplies are also provided by MP Shah Hospital.

Mwaura noted that the Kenya Red Cross is also on-site, offering counseling to survivors and victims’ families.

The Red Cross and Special Programs were reportedly coordinating tents, blankets, and medical supplies. On the ground, national and county education officials were reportedly coordinating efforts, liaising with parents and the local community.

The government stated its full commitment to supporting the victims, their families, and the broader school community during the difficult time. Authorities were reportedly working closely with relevant agencies and key stakeholders to provide the necessary support.

According to reports, the fire started at 11 p.m., and Kiawara firefighters were the first to respond. However, they sought aid from the Nyeri Fire Brigade when they realized the fire was too enormous to tackle alone.

Nyeri firefighters arrived at the scene around 3 a.m., but the damage had already been extensive.

In a statement released Friday, Education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Belio Kipsang stated that all of the pupils of the ill-fated dormitory were males.
